Steel Windows and Doors: Three Routes to the Same Look

The aesthetic is unmistakable and roughly a century old. Slender dark frames, generous glass, a grid of thin members holding large openings that earlier construction could not achieve. It came out of early twentieth century European industrial building, ran through Bauhaus, and has never really left contemporary architecture.
What has changed is how you get it.
An architect specifying that look today has three genuinely different routes: hot-rolled steel, thermally broken steel, and aluminum engineered to reproduce steel proportions. They produce similar images and very different buildings. The sightline difference between them can be a few millimeters. The difference in thermal performance, weight, lead time, corrosion behavior, and cost is not marginal at all.
Most suppliers carry one of the three and will tell you it is the right answer. This guide compares all three on the terms that decide real projects. Route one: hot-rolled steel
This is the authentic article, and in a meaningful sense it is the same product that produced the aesthetic in the first place.
Hot-rolled steel profiles are formed by the original production technique, which dates to the late nineteenth century. The process produces the specific profile geometry and surface character that no other method reproduces exactly, because the profile is a consequence of how the material was formed rather than an imitation of it.
OTTOSTUMM | MOGS supplies two hot-rolled systems that Lucent carries. FerroFinestra W20 originates from the British Universal Range and is a complete line of hot-rolled profiles used for both exterior openings and interior partitions, which allows the building envelope and the interior detailing to hold one visual language. FerroFinestra W40 is one of the very few systems still produced by the original hot-rolling technique, offering a complete range of thick steel profiles supporting very large windows with minimalist frames across side-hung, bottom-hung, top-hung, tilt-and-turn, pivoting, sliding, and folding configurations.
What hot-rolled steel gives you
Profile authenticity that survives close inspection. Genuine minimum sightlines. Structural capacity that permits spans and panel proportions no other material achieves at equivalent frame dimension. And a material character, particularly in natural or Cor-Ten finishes, that reads as material rather than as coating.
What it costs you
Thermal performance is the honest weakness. A hot-rolled profile without a thermal break conducts heat aggressively, which produces cold interior surfaces and condensation in any climate with real winter. In many jurisdictions it will not meet energy code for a conditioned exterior opening.
Beyond thermal, steel is heavy, which drives structural requirements at the opening and complicates installation. It requires corrosion management, particularly in coastal exposure. Lead times are long. And the cost per opening is at the top of the range.
Where it is the only right answer
Historic restoration and listed buildings where period-correct fenestration is the requirement. Interior partitions and screens, where thermal performance is not a factor and W20's dual interior-exterior application is a genuine advantage. Projects where the material itself is the design argument and budget follows the design.
Route two: thermally broken steel
This is where most serious contemporary projects land, and it is the route that makes steel viable in a modern envelope.
A thermally broken steel system keeps the steel profile and introduces an insulating barrier that separates the interior and exterior sections of the frame. The barrier carries the structural connection while interrupting the conductive path, which is the same principle used in thermally broken aluminum.

FerroFinestra W50 TB maintains exactly the same profile shapes as the original hot-rolled FerroFinestra, using a high-density polyurethane thermal break. If the design requires the W40 appearance with contemporary thermal performance, this is the system that delivers both.
FerroFinestra W75 TB is the most technologically advanced thermally insulated system in the range. A 75mm profile depth accommodates high-performance insulating glazing up to 52mm, with a fiberglass-reinforced polyamide insulator. It is available in bright steel, galvanized steel, stainless 1.4404, Cor-Ten, and architectural bronze, in both flush and overlapping configurations, and includes a tilt-and-turn opening mechanism.
Mogs 2mm M65 TB is the system for projects where sightline is the governing constraint. It achieves sightlines of 18mm using 2mm steel thickness across depths of 65 to 72mm, with a polyamide PA 6.6 thermal break. For large openings where the frame must nearly disappear while still meeting energy requirements, this is the narrowest genuinely thermally broken steel option available.
The arguments beyond aesthetics
Security. OTTOSTUMM profiles are derived from continuously formed and welded steel sheet no less than 1.5mm thick, which raises forced-entry resistance substantially above what a comparable aluminum profile offers. The thermal break systems are designed so that the insulating barrier does not compromise that resistance.
Sustainability. The steel billets, rods, and strips these profiles are formed from are smelted from almost entirely recycled steel scrap, and at end of life the frames, fittings, and glass are all systematically recoverable.
Material range within one profile family. Because W75 TB is offered in bronze as well as several steel grades, a project can mix materials across an elevation while holding a single profile geometry. Route three: steel-look aluminum
The third route accepts a different material in exchange for a different performance profile.
Sosoares ST-Steel is an addition to the ST thermal break family, engineered specifically to recreate the lines of iron frames in aluminum. The parent ST system is a 71mm opening system with thermally enhanced profiles designed for selective double or triple glazing, achieving high thermal and acoustic insulation. ST-Steel takes that platform and reshapes the profile geometry toward the ferrofinestra proportions.

What aluminum gains
Weight, which cascades into simpler structural requirements at the opening and easier installation. Thermal performance, which is easier to achieve in aluminum at equivalent profile depth. Cost, typically well below steel per opening. Lead time. Corrosion behavior, particularly in marine exposure where aluminum's oxide layer is self-protecting and steel requires ongoing management. And finish range, since aluminum accepts powder coating and anodizing across effectively unlimited colors.
What aluminum gives up
Absolute minimum sightline. Aluminum requires more material than steel to achieve equivalent structural performance, so at the extreme narrow end steel wins and will continue to.
Material authenticity at close range. A steel-look aluminum profile is engineered to read as steel, and at typical viewing distances it does. Standing at the jamb, it does not.
The way steel takes a finish. Natural hot-rolled steel, Cor-Ten, and burnished finishes have a depth and variation that powder coating approximates rather than reproduces.
The honest test
At what viewing distance does the difference stop mattering, and does that distance describe your project?
For a window package across an elevation viewed from a garden, steel-look aluminum is frequently indistinguishable and considerably better on every performance axis. For an entry door that people touch daily, or an interior screen at arm's length, it is not.
Did you know? Almost no supplier carries all three routes. That means the recommendation you receive is usually a function of inventory rather than analysis, and it is worth asking any supplier which of the three they do not sell before weighing their advice.

Pro tip: Specify the required sightline as a dimension in millimetres rather than describing it as "minimal" or "slim." One number forces every bidder to a specific system and eliminates most of the ambiguity that produces mismatched quotes.

Environment and code

Coastal and marine exposure is where the three routes separate most sharply. Aluminum forms a self-protecting oxide layer and performs indefinitely in salt air with appropriate alloy selection. Steel requires active corrosion management, though stainless 1.4404 and Cor-Ten options within the OTTOSTUMM range change that calculation considerably. If the project sits in direct marine exposure and the maintenance regime is uncertain, that is an argument for aluminum regardless of aesthetic preference.
Thermal cycling and condensation favor whichever system carries a proper thermal break, not whichever material is nominally better. An untreated hot-rolled steel frame and an untreated aluminum frame both perform badly. The break matters more than the metal.
Energy code compliance is increasingly the constraint that decides this question before aesthetics get a vote. Washington's 2021 energy code, effective March 2024, requires U-factors of 0.30 or better for residential fenestration. Any specification of untreated hot-rolled steel for a conditioned exterior opening needs to be checked against local code early, not at permit.
Acoustic performance tends to favor the systems that accommodate thicker glazing packages. W75 TB's 75mm depth carrying glazing to 52mm gives real acoustic headroom.

Applying the aesthetic across system types
The steel look is not confined to casements and fixed lights.
Pivot. Minimal-frame pivot entries are one of the strongest applications of the aesthetic, where a narrow frame around a large panel makes the door read as a plane of glass held by a line. Minimal sliding. Fixed and large-format glazing. This is where the frame does the least work visually and the sightline argument matters most.
Interior partitions and screens. W20's suitability for both interior and exterior application means a project can carry one profile language from the facade into the plan. At arm's length inside a building, the argument for genuine hot-rolled steel is strongest.

A project in steel

Big Door Magazine's feature on the Wallowa project makes an argument worth reading alongside this guide. Brutalist architecture has no tolerance for imprecision, because every joint, edge, and transition stays exposed. Steel in that context demands as much from the installer as from the architect.
That is the part of steel specification that rarely appears in product literature. The material is unforgiving of installation tolerance in a way that more forgiving systems are not, and specifying it commits the project to a level of field precision that has to be planned for rather than hoped for. What to write into the specification
Name the route, not the appearance. "Steel-look" in a specification will be satisfied by any of the three. State hot-rolled, thermally broken steel, or steel-look aluminum.
State the required sightline as a dimension. This single number eliminates more ambiguity than any other line in the specification, because it forces the supplier to a system rather than a category.
Require the frame U-value separately from the whole-window U-value, so thermal break performance is visible rather than averaged into the glazing.
Specify the steel grade or the alloy, not just "steel" or "aluminum." Bright steel, galvanized, stainless 1.4404, and Cor-Ten behave very differently in exposure and cost.
Specify glazing thickness accommodation, which constrains profile depth and therefore constrains which systems can bid.
State the corrosion management expectation for steel, including what maintenance the client is accepting over the building's life. This is the conversation that most often does not happen and most often causes problems.
Confirm interior and exterior profile compatibility if the design carries the aesthetic from the facade into the plan.
Ask for a physical sample at the specified finish before committing to steel-look aluminum. The photographs are convincing. Whether the actual profile satisfies the design intent is a judgment that has to be made in person.

What is the narrowest sightline achievable in a thermally broken system?
Mogs 2mm M65 TB reaches 18mm sightlines using 2mm steel across a 65 to 72mm profile depth with a polyamide PA 6.6 thermal break. That is at the narrow end of what is currently possible while still meeting contemporary thermal requirements. Non-thermally-broken hot-rolled profiles can go narrower, but at a thermal cost that most exterior applications cannot accept.
Can steel-look aluminum genuinely pass for steel?
At typical viewing distances for an exterior window package, in most cases yes. At arm's length, no. The profile geometry can be reproduced convincingly, but the way steel takes a natural or Cor-Ten finish has a depth that powder coating approximates rather than matches. Ask for a physical sample and judge it at the distance your project will actually be seen from.
Do steel windows meet current energy codes?
Thermally broken steel systems do. Untreated hot-rolled steel generally does not for conditioned exterior openings in climates with meaningful winter. Washington's current code requires U-factors of 0.30 or better for residential fenestration, and similar requirements apply across most of the region. How does steel compare to bronze for coastal projects?

Can one project mix steel and steel-look aluminum?
Yes, and it is often the right answer. Use hot-rolled or thermally broken steel where the material is seen and touched, such as entry doors and interior screens, and steel-look aluminum across the larger window package where viewing distance is greater and unit count makes cost material. The specification challenge is matching sightlines and finish across the two, which needs resolving during design development rather than at shop drawings.
What maintenance do steel windows require?
Considerably more than aluminum or bronze. Painted and bright steel finishes need periodic inspection and touch-up, particularly at joints and hardware penetrations where coatings are most vulnerable. Cor-Ten and stainless reduce this substantially. Coastal exposure raises the requirement across every steel grade. Set the maintenance expectation with the client in writing during specification, because it is the most common source of disappointment on steel projects.

The steel aesthetic is one of the few architectural languages that has held for a century without becoming period. What has changed is that an architect now has three genuine ways to speak it, and the right one depends on whether the project is buying the look, the material, or the performance.
Hot-rolled steel is right when the material is the argument. Thermally broken steel is right when the project needs steel character inside a modern envelope. Steel-look aluminum is right more often than material purists admit, particularly on coastal sites and across large unit counts.
